Three Corps, Two Chairs

Colts, Troopers and Blue Knights hold 9th, 10th and 11th, separated by less than a point, with Madison Scouts closing from below. Twelve corps march Saturday night in Indianapolis. The music is getting faster.

Rank the field by most recent score and the finals bubble stops being an abstraction. Colts sit 9th at 88.0. Troopers sit 10th at 86.45. Blue Knights sit 11th at 85.1. That is 2.9 points covering three corps and, functionally, the last comfortable seats for Saturday night in Indianapolis. And while none of the three performed at DCI St. Louis last night, Madison Scouts did — 83.0 in Belleville, 5.00 behind Colts and closer than that to everyone else.

The arithmetic of the race deserves to be stated plainly, because "bubble" gets thrown around loosely every July. Twelve corps make finals. Eight of them are locks — the simulation gives the top eight better than a 99.9% chance apiece — which leaves four open chairs and six corps grabbing for them: these three, plus Madison Scouts, Pacific Crest and Spirit of Atlanta. The title of this piece is the fear, not the forecast: the model does not say only two of the three make it. It says the three of them are fighting over roughly two and a half seats, and fractions of a seat are not a thing you can march.

Read the middle column and the season has a clear pecking order: Troopers have beaten Colts 3 times in 6 tries, Troopers have handled Blue Knights 9–1, and Colts hold the tiebreak over Blue Knights at 6–2. By the ledger, Troopers are the best of the three. Now read the right column, which contains only the most recent evidence, and the order inverts completely.

The three have shared one field all season: NightBEAT in Winston-Salem, NC, Jul 26. One panel, one night, no scheduling excuses — and it produced the tightest stack of the year. Colts took the group at 88.0, Troopers landed 1.55 back at 86.45 — and Blue Knights closed the group 2.9 behind the leader. If you want to know what Prelims morning will feel like for these three, that recap is the trailer.

Where Each Corps Wins
Caption-level record in every shared recap, all three pairings. Read each column as wins for the first-named corps.
CaptionTroopers–ColtsColts–BKTroopers–BK
GE Music 3–3 5–3 5–4
GE Visual 2–4 4–4 5–4
Visual Proficiency 2–4 6–2 6–3
Visual Analysis 3–3 4–4 5–4
Color Guard 1–5 8–0 6–3
Brass 4–2 3–5 8–1
Percussion 3–3 8–0 9–0
Music Analysis 3–3 4–4 4–5

The remarkable thing about this table is that it hands each corps a different kingdom. Troopers own the music captions outright — their brass and battery have combined losses you can count on one hand across both rivalries, and the percussion line has never lost to Blue Knights on a shared sheet this season. Colts own the flags: their color guard is undefeated against both rivals, every single recapped meeting, a perfect caption record inside an imperfect series. And Blue Knights own the caption that pays the most — GE Visual, weighted double on the sheet, where they hold the edge over both corps. Three specialists, one cut line.

Colts' vulnerability is just as legible: brass. They have dropped the horn caption in 4 of 6 recapped meetings with Troopers and 5 of 8 with Blue Knights. When you are protecting a half-point lead at the cut line, a caption you lose almost every night is not a quirk. It is a standing invoice.

The Rope, Revisited
Troopers' guard surge, updated. Full treatment in The Guard Is Carrying Them.

We wrote yesterday that Troopers' color guard is the caption pulling the corps up the standings, and the claim has only firmed since: 13.0 on opening night to 17.4 at their latest recap, a gain of +4.4 that stands #1 among all 20 World Class guards. Held against this piece's caption table, that produces a genuinely strange fact. Colts' guard is 5–1 against Troopers' guard head-to-head — and yet Troopers' guard now posts the highest raw number of the three (17.4 to Colts' 17.3, latest recaps, Blue Knights at 17.0). Those numbers come from different panels on different nights, which is exactly why they coexist. Saturday in Atlanta puts all three guards on one sheet, and one of those two claims stops being true.

The Math
P(top 12) from 10,000 simulated Finals weeks on the projected-score distributions behind the projections page. Same engine as the Cut Line piece, extended to joint outcomes.

Individually: Colts 94.4% to make finals, Troopers 63.0%, Blue Knights 23.1%. Colts' cushion is real but thinner than a 9th-place seed usually enjoys; the other two are functionally tied, which tracks, since the model projects their Finals scores within hundredths of each other. Sum the three probabilities and you get about two and a half seats — the entire thesis of this piece in one number.

Jointly, across 10,000 simulated championship weeks: all three corps make finals in 3.9% of them. Exactly two make it in 73.0%. Something uglier happens in 23.1%. So the most likely single outcome is that everyone squeezes in and this piece ages into a curiosity — but a 96-in-100 chance that at least one of these three watches Saturday night from the stands is not a tail risk. It is a coin that lands badly almost half the time. And when it lands badly, the seat rarely goes unclaimed: Madison Scouts (3.5% overall) are in the top 12 while at least one trio corps is out in 3.5% of all sims. The chair does not disappear. Someone else sits in it.

The Paths
What each corps actually needs, caption by caption, from the What-If Machine's Path to Position solver — the most likely route within each corps's demonstrated caption variance.

One framing note first: the solver works on projected Finals order, not the current scoreboard — and in projection, Blue Knights and Troopers flip, with Blue Knights holding 10th by hundredths. So "Troopers to 10th" below means taking that projected seat back, not defending the one they hold today.

Troopers, to 10th: the solver's cheapest route is almost insultingly small — Troop push GE Music to 19.29 at finals (1.00 above their 18.29 projection); Troop push GE Visual to 18.79 at finals (0.80 above their 17.99 projection). It rates the path 0.0% on trajectory alone (very long shot), and the caption it leans on is the same guard that has been climbing all month. When the gap between 10th and 11th in projection is measured in hundredths, one good rep is a passing lane.

Blue Knights, to 9th: the solver cannot find a realistic route; the wild version needs BK push GE Music to 19.19 at finals (1.00 above their 18.19 projection); and BK push GE Visual to 19.79 at finals (2.20 above their 17.59 projection). The likelier Blue Knights story is simpler and grimmer: hold 10th-or-11th against Troopers, whom they just beat in San Antonio, and against a Scouts corps gaining faster than anyone.

Colts, the trapdoor: we asked the solver the morbid question — what drops Colts to 13th — and it returned a shrug. No path inside roughly three sigma of demonstrated variance gets them cut; the disaster requires a multi-point GE collapse paired with a career night from below, the kind of scenario the model files under miracle. That is the honest shape of Colts' position: their 94.4% is not fragile to their own bad night. It is fragile only to three weeks of other corps' momentum.

Madison Scouts, the crash: their route to 11th exists at 0.0% per the solver — Scouts push GE Music to 19.69 at finals (2.20 above their 17.49 projection); plus Scouts push GE Visual to 19.79 at finals (2.60 above their 17.19 projection). Low probability on any single night. But Scouts do not need the solver's route; they need three more weeks of the trend line they are already on.

Two full seasons of archive say the mid-July board mostly keeps its word: of the eight corps who held ranks 9 through 12 on July 20 across 2023 and 2024, 7 made finals. The exception is the whole story, though. Pacific Crest held 11th in 2023 — inside the line, seemingly safe — and were cut at semis while Colts rose from 13th to a 9th-place finish, the biggest late jump in our archive. Position in July is a lease, not a deed.

Every corps in this fight has personal history with that lesson. Troopers have run the 10th-or-11th-in-July play twice and cashed it into finals both times. Colts have lived both endings — the 2023 surge from outside and a comfortable hold in 2024. Blue Knights carry the scar: 14th through July 20 last season, cut at semis, the only one of the three watching Saturday night from the stands. They are also, right now, the one of the three with the slowest recent scoring pace. That combination is why nobody in Denver is treating an 11th-place seed as a seat.

The Lurkers
Gain per show over each contender's last three outings — who is actually closing.
CorpsLatestLast-3 paceP(Finals)
Colts 88.0 +1.55/show 94.4%
Troopers 86.45 +0.45/show 63.0%
Blue Knights 85.1 +0.15/show 23.1%
Madison Scouts 83.0 +0.17/show 3.5%
Spirit of Atlanta 85.25 +0.91/show 21.0%
Pacific Crest 83.2 +1.00/show 5.0%

The pace column is the part of this piece that should keep three corps directors up at night. Madison Scouts are gaining +0.17 per show over their last three — the fastest closing speed of anyone in the zone — and their 83.0 in Belleville last night landed within half a point of Blue Knights' latest. The structural oddity of the chase: Scouts do not share a field with any of the three again until World Championship Prelims. This entire pursuit happens on separate panels in separate cities, which means nobody gets a scoreboard verdict until the one morning when the verdict is the whole season.

Pacific Crest (5.0%) and Spirit of Atlanta (21.0%) are a tier further back — both a little over two points off the trio, both needing help as well as heat. But 2023 Pacific Crest is the ghost at this table for a different reason than usual: they are proof the cut line eats corps who look safe, and this year they are positioned as the corps doing the eating. Nobody below 12th needs to catch Colts. They need to catch whoever stumbles.

The chair does not disappear when one of the three misses. Someone else sits in it — and in 3.5% of simulated seasons, that someone wears Madison green.

2 shared nights left before Indianapolis, 1 with all three corps on one panel, starting with the Southeastern Championship in Atlanta this Saturday. That is the falsifiable read, so this desk can be graded later: if the Atlanta recap reproduces San Antonio — Colts and Blue Knights over Troopers on a shared sheet — then the season series is stale information and the trio's real order is the recent one. If Troopers restore the ledger, the circle is unbroken and the three of them ride to Prelims genuinely unsorted. Either way, watch the 12th-place score in Belleville's wake: the gap between this trio and Madison Scouts, not the gaps inside the trio, is the number that decides whether "Three Corps, Two Chairs" was a title or a prophecy.

Scores and captions from DCI and CompetitionSuite recaps. Head-to-head and caption records cover every 2026 shared show with published recaps; Broken Arrow-style totals-only nights count toward series records but not caption splits. Finals probabilities derived from the DCI Forge Monte Carlo projection model (10k-trial source run); P(top 12) and joint outcomes computed from 10,000 independent rankings of projected Finals-score distributions. Corps are independent draws; real panels correlate, so treat single-digit differences as vibes with error bars. Caption paths from the Path to Position solver, bounded at roughly three sigma of demonstrated caption variance. Historical precedent is totals-only; caption-level archives do not exist for 2023/2024.
