Caption Wars

The total tells you who's winning. The captions tell you why, who's paying for it, and where the next move gets made.

The Score Beneath the Score
What the caption sheets reveal that the total doesn't.

For years I read recaps the way you check a lottery ticket. Total, my corps, close the tab. This was wrong the way skimming a will is wrong: the number at the bottom is the least interesting sentence on the page. A total is eight opinions stuffed into one figure, eight judges who agreed on nothing except that they had to hand in something, and the disagreements are where the season actually lives. We're 23 scored shows into 2026, and the sheets are muttering things the standings haven't worked up the nerve to say.

Brass at the Beach handed me the rarest line in this sport, and I checked it twice before believing it. Carolina Crown took every caption on the sheet, all 8 of them, general effect down through the analysis numbers, and left the other 5 corps in the stadium holding a raffle for second. Understand what a whole-sheet sweep requires. Eight judges, hired partly for their willingness to disagree, all reached for the same pen. Panels are built like juries precisely so this doesn't happen, which is the entire reason it means something when it does.

Start at the ceiling and work down, because the ceiling is where the arguments go to die. Eighteen is the quietest sentence a judge can write and the loudest thing a corps can hear: this part of your show is finished, in July, a month when nothing is supposed to be finished, when tarps still have wrinkles and closers still have scaffolding. It's been said 230 times this season, to 8 corps: Bluecoats, Blue Devils, Carolina Crown, Boston Crusaders, Santa Clara Vanguard, The Cavaliers, Blue Stars, Phantom Regiment. The top mark is Bluecoats' 19.15 in GE Music at DCI Southeastern Championship. Everyone else is out in the hallway, rehearsing for an audition that may not come.

Bluecoats lead at 94.85, 1.4 up on Blue Devils. You knew that before you clicked. Here's the number I trust the way I trust a plumber over a brochure: caption spread, the distance between a corps' best caption and its worst. A total tells you the bridge is standing. Spread tells you whether one bolt has been doing the work of forty. Bluecoats' spread is 0.3, and nobody in the field runs tighter. If you're the one chasing, sit with that over coffee. There is no soft caption. There is no unlocked window. You have to beat the whole building, floor by floor, and the building knows you're coming. Meanwhile Santa Clara Vanguard carry a spread of 1.3, widest in the top eight. Their best caption and their worst are a married couple who arrived in separate cars.

The GE Music Gap
General Effect Music. How well the musical program communicates, paces, and connects with the audience.

Money can't buy GE Music, though the receipts prove plenty of corps have tried. Precision, you can drill until midnight forgives you. A guard toss, you can repeat until it's boring. But a show that makes twenty thousand strangers inhale on the same beat is a decision somebody made in a design room in January, wearing a coat, drinking bad coffee, and by July that decision either landed or it didn't. There's no cleaning your way into it. Bluecoats' landed. Their 19.1 at NightBEAT is the season high, 0.2 up on Carolina Crown. Small number. Wrong instinct. This caption moves in tenths the way glaciers move in inches, and daylight is daylight.

Against the field average, Bluecoats carry a +1.83 edge in GE Music. Different stadiums, different panels, different weather, same verdict, which is the part that should bother their rivals most. One judge loving your show is taste. All of them, everywhere, in any humidity, is architecture.

Colts own the climb: 13.5 on opening night, 17.9 now, up +4.4. GE does not drift that far on cleaning. Cleaning buys tenths; this is furniture moving. Somewhere in late June a staff meeting ran long, a saw came out, something beloved hit the floor, and whatever it was, the judges stopped missing it immediately.

Who's building it: GE is a designer's caption, so look at who's holding the pen. Bluecoats' program runs through Jonathan Vanderkolff, the coordinator behind their run of genre-bending shows since the mid-2010s. One spot back sits the offseason's headline hire. Carolina Crown landed Keith Potter, the artistic director who delivered Boston Crusaders' first-ever World Championship in 2025, to run their program. When the architect of the reigning champion's show switches uniforms, the GE race stops being about this August and starts being about the next three.

The Visual Split
GE Visual judges the visual design's impact. Visual Proficiency scores execution. Visual Analysis evaluates compositional quality. Three different questions about the same performance.

Three judges watch the same twelve minutes and answer three different questions, which is either bureaucracy or philosophy depending on the night. Does it move you? Bluecoats, 18.9, with Santa Clara Vanguard next at 18.6. Is it clean? Bluecoats, 19.0. Is it well built? Bluecoats, 19.1. Three answers, one name: monster. Three answers, different names: story, and stories are better for business.

Monster, currently. Bluecoats hold all three, which is the judging community saying the design is ambitious, the execution honors it, and nobody can find the seam where one ends and the other begins. There's nothing to argue about here. I say that as a man who has argued about intermission length.

Then there's Carolina Crown, two different corps sharing one uniform and, presumably, one bus. The visual corps is elite: 18.3 in GE Visual, a Visual Analysis mark that hangs with anybody's. The percussion corps plays at 18.2. Their spread of 0.9 is the widest anywhere near the top of the standings, and it is, to the decimal, the distance between where Crown sit at #3 and where the rest of their sheet swears they belong. Everyone in their admin tent knows which caption. So do the drummers, who read the same recaps we do.

Percussion is the strongest caption for 4 corps and the weakest for 6. No other caption splits the field like that. Drums never tell you how good a corps is. They tell you what it is, the way handwriting tells on a person.
The Brass Arms Race
Music Brass. Intonation, balance, tone quality, and the sound that separates a great hornline from a good one.

Carolina Crown hold brass at 19.0, Bluecoats at 18.8. I would not spend that lead all in one place, and I wouldn't lend against it either. Two tenths is stadium acoustics. Two tenths is the wind deciding to attend the ballad. Two tenths is which judge had the long drive. This caption gets re-decided every single night, and both brass staffs sleep with one eye on it.

Who's building it: Brass is where staff continuity shows up fastest in the scores. Doug Thrower writes the Bluecoats book. He's been on staff since 1992 and in the arranging chair since 1997, and the Hall of Fame called in 2019. His sound has defined the corps for a generation. Carolina Crown answer with Michael Klesch, music director and arranger there since 2003 (Hall of Fame 2012). He wrote the 2013 championship book and two decades of the scariest brass in the activity. Watch the Crossmen. Their pen now belongs to John Meehan, the Blue Devils' brass architect since 1994 and a 2019 Hall of Famer. A top-three arranger just landed in a mid-pack corps, and that resets a hornline's ceiling. The Cavaliers went and hired Jay Bocook, the Grammy-nominated arranger who spent 24 years writing for the Cadets (Hall of Fame 2009). He's in year two of reshaping the Green Machine's sound.

The Percussion Paradox
Music Percussion. Battery and front ensemble, and the caption most likely to disagree with the standings.

Percussion runs its own economy, prints its own currency, and does not recognize the exchange rate the rest of the sheet trades at. Bluecoats lead at 19.0, which is the least interesting fact in this section, the way the winner of a family argument is the least interesting part of the argument. The interesting fact: drums are the strongest caption for 4 corps and the weakest for 6. Half the activity is built on its drumline. The other half is built despite it, and both halves would swear under oath they're the first kind. No other caption sorts the field into believers and apologists this cleanly.

The reason is structural, almost insultingly boring. A drumline answers to one staff, rehearses as one organism, and can be rebuilt in a single winter by one great teacher with a whiteboard and no mercy. A corps can't. Corps turn like container ships. So drums are where the future docks first, two or three seasons before the total score is willing to sign for the delivery.

You can watch the future load in real time, no appointment necessary. The Cavaliers sit #9 overall while their battery ranks #5 at 18.6. Not flukes. Those are percussion programs that finished ahead of schedule and are now standing in an empty house, coats still on, waiting for the rest of the furniture to show up. If you want a rough sketch of the 2028 standings, skip the projections and start here.

Who's building it: No caption runs on staff the way percussion does, and the staff map explains the scores. Boston's line is Colin McNutt's. He came over from the Cadets in 2017 alongside brass director Gino Cipriani, and the decade since is what a caption-leading battery looks like from the inside. Scott Johnson still has the Blue Devils drums. He marched their snare line in the late '70s and has run the percussion program since 1994. That's his fifth decade there and the longest single-caption run in the activity. Then there's the Rennick footprint. Paul and Sandi Rennick write for Santa Clara Vanguard and Troopers at the same time. Paul has nine Sanford Awards. Sandi enters the DCI Hall of Fame with the class of 2026. If you've wondered why Troopers' percussion outranks their placement, it's because a champion-grade book is being played in Casper. Keep an eye on Colts. Their battery is in year one under Travis Peterman, hired away from Carolina Crown. That kind of rebuild reads as a low number now and a trajectory later.

Guard: The Tiebreaker
Color Guard. Equipment, movement, and the performers most exposed to the audience. Swings the most night to night.

Guard is where scoreboards lose their nerve. Two corps within a point usually separate here, because no caption swings harder between a great night and a merely fine one. A blown rifle toss doesn't cost a tenth. It costs the closer its oxygen, and the GE judges are sitting in the same thin air, holding the same pens. Blue Devils hold the caption at 19.1, 0.2 up on Bluecoats at 18.9.

The climb worth your attention belongs to Troopers: 13.0 in June, 17.4 now, up +4.4. Understand what that number costs. Repetition doesn't buy three points in this caption; repetition buys you the same show, shinier. Restaging buys it. Harder equipment thrown into hands that couldn't hold it in May buys it. Somewhere a caption head placed a bet in February, in a gym that smelled like floor wax, and is currently walking around collecting.

Who's building it: Boston's guard numbers have a name attached. Michael Townsend, their longtime guard caption head and lead choreographer, moved up to design and artistic lead after Keith Potter left for Crown. Promoting the guard architect to run the whole design is a bet that the caption that won them 2025 can carry the rest of the program. A reigning champion's guard score with the same hands still on it is about as safe a call as this caption offers.

The Architects
The numbers show what's happening. The staff sheet explains why. Three ways a caption gets built, from verified 2026 rosters.

Every number on this page was a decision before it was a score. A 17.9 brass book doesn't happen to a corps the way weather happens to a picnic. Somebody wrote it in September, taught it in May, tore up the ending in July and apologized to nobody. Sort the 2026 staff sheet and the whole field falls into three piles, the same three piles as every gold rush: corps betting on continuity, corps buying pedigree, and corps burning the blueprints on purpose to see what grows.

The Long Game
Tenure you can hear in the scores
Scott Johnson · Blue Devils percussion. On staff since 1994, marched the snare line in the '70s. His fifth decade with the corps.
Doug Thrower · Bluecoats brass. Staff since 1992, the arranging pen since 1997. Hall of Fame 2019.
Michael Klesch · Crown brass. Music director and arranger since 2003. Hall of Fame 2012, and he wrote the 2013 title book.
Gino Cipriani + Colin McNutt · Boston brass + percussion. Hired together from the Cadets in 2017. A decade of paired continuity behind the reigning champions' music program.
Paul + Sandi Rennick · SCV percussion (and Troopers'). Paul has nine Sanford wins. Sandi enters the DCI Hall of Fame in 2026.
The Legend Market
Big names in new uniforms
Keith Potter → Crown program coordinator. The artistic director behind Boston's first-ever championship in 2025, now designing for the corps chasing them.
John Meehan → Crossmen music coordinator. The Blue Devils' brass architect since 1994 (Hall of Fame 2019), now writing for a mid-pack hornline whose ceiling just jumped.
Jay Bocook → Cavaliers brass. Twenty-four years as the Cadets' arranger (Hall of Fame 2009), in year two of rebuilding the Green Machine's sound. Also consulting for Blue Knights.
Rosie Miller Queen → Crown visual advisor. WGI executive and former Crown guard caption head, back on the design side.
The Rebuilds
Year one and two. Read the trajectory, not the number
Colts · New percussion team under Travis Peterman (ex-Crown) and a reset visual staff under Zac Chowning. Two captions in year one at the same time. Judge them next July, not this one.
Madison Scouts · Blake Daughtrey returns to run the visual program, and brass adds Susan L. Smith, a 'teacher of teachers' hire from Troy University.
Boston Crusaders · Year one post-Potter, with guard architect Michael Townsend moved up to design lead. The quietest kind of rebuild. Same hands, bigger canvas.
Troopers · Year two under production coordinator Jason Robb (ex-Madison), stacked on the Rennick percussion book. The pieces are newer than the scores suggest.

The Offseason Ledger

Every tracked staff move shaping the 2026 caption race.

Rosie Miller Queen Carolina Crown 2025-09
Visual Design Advisor added to Crown for 2026. WGI executive, former Crown guard caption head, and architect of Carmel HS's WGI/BOA dynasty. Strengthens Crown's visual/guard design alongside Potter.
Momentum Watch
Who's still accelerating, who's plateauing, and who to watch in the second half.

Standings are a photograph. Deltas are the security footage, and the footage is where the confessions are. By mid-July I mostly stop asking who's ahead and start asking who's still moving, because the first question answers itself every night at eleven and the second one pays out in August. The steepest recent climbers: Crossmen (+1.55 avg per show over their last 3 shows); Spartans (+1.32 avg per show over their last 3 shows); The Academy (+1.3 avg per show over their last 3 shows).

And the long arcs, opening night to now: Troopers +18.6, Colts +18.3, Blue Devils +17.75. Each of them rolled into June with a half-built show and treated the schedule as a dress rehearsal that happened to sell tickets. It worked, which tells you exactly how much respect August is about to get.

The Headlines
Three stories from the caption sheet worth sharing.
The 18 Club
An 18 in mid-July is supposed to be a typo. This season it's a club with 8 members: Bluecoats, Blue Devils, Carolina Crown, Boston Crusaders, Santa Clara Vanguard, The Cavaliers, Blue Stars, Phantom Regiment. Between them, 230 caption scores at 18.0 or better across 8 captions, with Finals still weeks out. The ceiling moved in the night, and nobody filed a permit.
The Percussion Paradox
Strongest caption for 4 corps, weakest for 6. Nothing else on the sheet divides the field that cleanly. A drumline is a corps' handwriting: the whole personality is legible in it, years before the transcript gets around to agreeing.
Caption vs. Standings
The Cavaliers rank #9 overall and #5 in Music Percussion, a gap of 4 spots. A caption that far ahead of the total isn't a stat. It's a forecast taped to the fridge: the standard the rest of the corps has to grow into, and the exact address their next jump will be mailed from.
