The Cut Line
Twelve corps march on Saturday night in Indianapolis. Colts and Blue Knights are standing on the same square foot of ground, and there may not be room for both.
I checked the recap from DCI Southwestern Championship three times before I trusted it, and I am a person who checks recaps for a hobby. Colts 82.413, Blue Knights 82.4. That is 0.013 of a point, on a night when eight judges filed roughly four hundred numbers between them. A drop of sweat weighs more. And it happened in ninth and tenth place, which in this sport is not the middle of the standings. It is the edge of a cliff with a velvet rope on it.
Here is the arithmetic that should keep two admin teams up at night. Finals is twelve corps. 7 of those seats are already spoken for, barring an equipment truck fire: the simulation puts everyone from the top 7 at better than 99% to advance. That leaves 5 open seats and 5 corps with a real claim on them, plus 2 more lurking in the single digits. Somebody who currently believes they are a finalist is going home on Friday night, and the sport does not send a card.
The two names written closest to the line are Colts and Blue Knights. Colts lead the season series 6–2, and the most recent word came at NightBEAT, where Colts took it, 88.0 to 85.1. But a series lead is not a seat. Below them, Troopers at 86.45 and Madison Scouts at 83.0 are close enough to hear both of them chewing.

Look at the margin column before you draw any conclusions from the win column. 6 of the 8 meetings have landed inside 1.2 points, and the last 3 have come in a span you could cover with a hand towel. Colts have taken 3 of the last three, which is the kind of streak that reads like control until you notice the sizes of the checks: this is not one corps pulling away, it is one corps winning the coin flip more often.
This is my favorite kind of rivalry, because the two corps are not actually playing the same sport. Colts win downstairs: percussion has gone Colts 8–0 across the recapped meetings at an average of +0.48, and the guard runs +0.69 in their favor. That is a battery and a flag line paying the rent every single night.
So every meeting between these two is a referendum on the sheet itself. A panel that hears ensemble sound votes one way. A panel that watches the back field votes the other. Neither corps can fix the other's strength by Friday, which is why the thing has flipped 3 times already. You do not settle an argument like this in July. You settle it in a dome, once, for keeps.
| Rank | Corps | Latest | Show | Gap to 12th · P(Finals) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | Phantom Regiment | 89.5 | Midwestern Championship · 07-25 | +4.40 · 99.8% |
| 8 | Colts | 88.0 | NightBEAT · 07-26 | +2.90 · 94.4% |
| 9 | The Cavaliers | 87.725 | Midwestern Championship · 07-25 | +2.62 · 90.7% |
| 10 | Troopers | 86.45 | NightBEAT · 07-26 | +1.35 · 63.0% |
| 11 | Spirit of Atlanta | 85.25 | Brass at the Beach · 07-28 | +0.15 · 21.4% |
| 12 | Blue Knights | 85.1 | NightBEAT · 07-26 | +0.00 · 23.1% |
| 13 | Pacific Crest | 83.2 | Midwestern Championship · 07-25 | -1.90 · 5.0% |
| 14 | Madison Scouts | 83.0 | Midwestern Championship · 07-25 | -2.10 · 3.5% |
| 15 | Crossmen | 82.1 | Brass at the Beach · 07-28 | -3.00 · 0.0% |
Now the part both fan bases would rather skip. Troopers sit at 86.45 and the model gives them 63.0% to be marching on Saturday. Madison Scouts are at 83.0, 3.5%, with Pacific Crest at 83.2 and 5.0% refusing to leave the conversation. None of them need to catch Colts or Blue Knights this week. They need to be within arm's reach in Indianapolis, where one flat run from the corps ahead does the catching for them. A two-point lead in July is real money, but it is real money in a casino.
The Scouts case is the sneaky one. They run a different tour loop than the rest of the bubble, so their next two weeks happen mostly out of sight of the corps they are chasing, and recaps from separate panels are famously bad at settling arguments. If Madison show up in Allentown two points better than anyone expects, nobody on the Colts or Blue Knights staff gets to be surprised. They watched this movie from the other side in years when it was them doing the sneaking.
Read those two numbers carefully, because the gap between them is the entire piece. Colts at 94.4% and Blue Knights at 23.1% looks like the same neighborhood. It is not. The model projects Colts at 92.6 with a standard deviation of 1.4, Blue Knights at 89.5 with a deviation of 1.6. Blue Knights are the higher-variance corps, and variance is a loan shark: it will happily hand you a ceiling, and it collects on the floor. Roughly one Blue Knights season in 1 ends with a Friday night phone call home. For Colts it is closer to one in 18.
And the failure mode is not exotic. Nobody has to collapse. Troopers at 63.0% are not a longshot, they are a coin leaning heads. The sim's median gap between 12th and 13th on Finals eve is 0.72. That is one tired ballad, one dropped rifle, one panel that hears the brass differently than the last one did. Every corps on this bubble has already had a night like that this season. The only question left is who has one during championship week.

Start with the comfort. Across 2 full seasons of data, every corps sitting 9th or 10th in mid-July made finals: 4 for 4. Same story for the score band these two occupy. 3 of 3 corps who stood between 82 and 84 through July 20 marched on Saturday night (The Cavaliers 83.3 in 2023, Blue Stars 83.25 in 2023, Colts 83.35 in 2024), and none of them finished worse than 11th. If you stopped reading here, you would book the hotel.
Do not stop reading here. In both seasons, the corps holding 9th in mid-July kept the seat and lost the neighborhood: Blue Stars slid from 9th to 11th, The Cavaliers slid from 9th to 11th. The pattern is consistent enough to name. Ninth in July is not a placement, it is a bus stop, and the corps behind you have seen the schedule.
And here is the one that should make this whole piece feel personal in Dubuque. In 2023, the biggest jump on the bubble belonged to Colts: 13th through July 20 at 79.45, 9th on Finals night at 90.263, blowing past Pacific Crest, who were 11th in mid-July and watched Saturday from the stands. The late kick is not a theory in this bracket. The corps that ran it most recently is one of the two protagonists.
The real cut margins, for calibration: the 12th and 13th scores at semis landed 0.95 apart in 2023, 1.725 apart in 2024. Our sim's median of 0.72 sits right in that range. History and the model agree on the size of the trapdoor; they just decline to say who stands on it.
Two honest caveats. Two seasons is a pattern, not a law. And 2026 is scoring a touch hot relative to recent years, so the 82-to-84 band travels upward with it; the rank-based read, 9th and 10th in mid-July, is the sturdier lens, and it is also the friendlier one. What it cannot promise is the thing both fan bases actually want promised: that the seat comes with the seeding attached.
They share 1 more regular-tour night before Prelims, and Troopers are in the building for 1 of them, which turns every one into a three-way audit. Same panels, same nights, no place for a soft recap to hide.
Colts lock it up by doing the boring thing: hold the percussion and guard edges that travel from panel to panel, keep the total moving with the field's, and stay two points clear of 13th place so that championship week is about seeding instead of survival. The trap door for them is a caption-proportion swing. If an Eastern panel falls in love with ensemble brass, their two best arguments get quieter exactly when the room gets bigger.
Blue Knights lock it up by converting one of these coin-flip meetings into actual daylight, a half point or more, before Allentown. The hornline and the GE numbers say the show has a higher gear, and the model's 1.6-point spread agrees. But the same spread means they, more than anyone else in the top ten, cannot afford a flat night in the wrong building. Their bumped scenario is not losing to Colts. It is beating Colts three more times by a tenth and then watching Troopers pass them both on a Friday when it matters more.
The falsifiable version, because a column that cannot be wrong is just weather: if either of these corps finishes more than a point clear of 13th at the Southeastern Championship in Atlanta, their seat is effectively booked and this piece was a scare story. If the margin is under a point on July 25, everything above is live, and the Eastern swing becomes the season. Tell us we're wrong.
