The Guard Is Carrying Them
Troopers are climbing toward the Colts–Blue Knights deadlock at the finals cut line, and it isn't the horns doing the pulling. It's the flags.
On Jun 27, opening night at Drums Along the Rockies, the judges handed Troopers' color guard a 13.0. Fine number. Polite number. The kind of number that says see you in the middle of the pack. At NightBEAT on Jul 26, the same caption came back 17.4. That is a gain of +4.4 — and nobody else's guard, not one in all of World Class, has covered that much ground this season.
Meanwhile the corps around them at the cut line have spent July locked in a staring contest. Colts and Blue Knights have been trading tenths at the 9–10 line long enough that we wrote a whole piece about it, and while both of them watched each other, Troopers walked up carrying flags. Total score at NightBEAT: 86.45, within shouting distance of both. The bubble is no longer a two-corps story. It hasn't been for about ten days.

A fairness note before anyone writes in: corps that started touring earlier have more runway, so the table flatters early birds. It doesn't matter here. The nearest guard to Troopers' +4.4 is Blue Devils at +3.7 over an almost identical span. Nobody who launched the same week is within a rotation of them. And the sheet math makes the carry literal: guard is halved into the total, so that gain has personally deposited about 2.2 of Troopers' 18.6-point season climb — 12% of the entire ascent from a caption whose fair share, by sheet weight, is ten.
The shape of the climb matters too. This wasn't a steady drip — the guard put up 16.6 at DCI Southeastern Championship, then came back 17.4 at the very next show. Different panel, sure, and panel changes buy tenths, not full points. Rewrites that land in the third week of July are a staff saying we know exactly what this show needs, out loud, in semaphore.
That's what a carry looks like on a recap: the guard sits 8th in the country while the corps around it ranks 10th, and no other Troopers caption outranks the corps by as much. The honest version of this piece says the rest of the sheet is not deadweight — percussion has quietly kept pace all season — but there's a difference between captions that climb with the corps and a caption that climbs ahead of it and throws a rope back. Since late June, exactly one caption has been the rope.
One wrinkle the fan forums will enjoy litigating: head-to-head, Colts' guard has still beaten Troopers' guard in 5 of their 6 shared recaps — even while Troopers won 3 of the 6 meetings on total. The most recent samples come from different panels on different nights, which settles nothing, which is the point. Atlanta puts them on one sheet and ends the argument.
| Rank | Corps | Latest | Show | P(Finals) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | Colts | 88.0 | NightBEAT · 07-26 | 94.4% |
| 9 | The Cavaliers | 87.725 | Midwestern Championship · 07-25 | 90.7% |
| 10 | Troopers | 86.45 | NightBEAT · 07-26 | 63.0% |
| 11 | Spirit of Atlanta | 85.25 | Brass at the Beach · 07-28 | 21.4% |
| 12 | Blue Knights | 85.1 | NightBEAT · 07-26 | 23.1% |
| 13 | Pacific Crest | 83.2 | Midwestern Championship · 07-25 | 5.0% |
| 14 | Madison Scouts | 83.0 | Midwestern Championship · 07-25 | 3.5% |
Here is the sentence that would have sounded absurd in June: the model now rates Troopers (63.0%) at or above Blue Knights (23.1%) to march Saturday night, with Colts (94.4%) holding the high ground. The two corps everyone framed as the bubble story have been joined by the corps nobody framed at all. And the margins these three will be separated by are not large: the sim's median gap between 12th and 13th on Finals eve is 0.72 — one tired closer, one dropped saber.
If you want to see what Troopers' road to a specific seat looks like caption by caption, the What-If Machine's Path to Position will draw it for you: pick a target rank and it solves for which sheets have to move. Spoiler: the guard line in that solution is already moving on its own.

Troopers have run this exact play before. In 2023 they stood 10th through July 20 and finished 10th on Finals night. In 2024 they stood 11th through July 20 and finished 10th on Finals night. Two seasons, two mid-July bubble positions, two Saturday-night appearances — both times passing somebody who'd out-scored them in July. The cautionary tale sits one row over: Pacific Crest held 11th on July 20, 2023, and got cut at semis. The bubble keeps most of its promises. It keeps them to the corps still accelerating in the last two weeks.
One honesty clause: we'd love to tell you whether those earlier Troopers runs were also guard-led, and the archive won't let us — caption-level recaps aren't in our historical data, only totals. So the precedent says Troopers close Julys well, full stop. Whether a guard-shaped engine closes better than the usual kind is a question 2026 gets to answer on the record, which is more fun anyway.
2 shared nights left before Indianapolis, which means no one gets to hide behind panel differences much longer. The falsifiable read, so this desk can be graded later: if Troopers' guard posts top-eight caption numbers at the Southeastern Championship in Atlanta with Colts and Blue Knights on the same recap, the carry is real and one of those two is in genuine trouble. If the guard slides back to the pack on a shared panel, then McKinney was a warm panel and a good night, and the cut line stays a two-corps story. Flags up either way.
