The Road to Indianapolis
Ten thousand simulated seasons, one scoreboard that counts. Who wins gold, who medals, who stands in the trophy six — and how sure the math actually is.
These are tonight's numbers. Every one of them has been moving all season — see the whole climb, corps by corps, as a stock chart below.
Here is what we did. We took every corps's scored 2026 season, fitted a trajectory curve to it — the same S-shaped climb every drum corps season traces, steep in July, flattening in August — and projected it to Finals night, 2026-08-08. Then we let ten thousand versions of the next three weeks happen. Not the message-board version, where your corps peaks and everyone else gets rained on. The boring version: sample each corps's finals score from its own fitted curve and its own demonstrated noise, squeeze the field the way late-season sheets always squeeze it, rank everybody, write down who won. Repeat until the sample size stops arguing with itself.
For once the scoreboard and the simulation agree. Bluecoats sit first at 94.85 and win 82.0% of the simulated seasons. That number is worth reading twice, because both halves matter. The favorite: nobody else clears 8%. And the ceiling on that favoritism: in 18 of every 100 simulated summers, somebody else is holding the trophy. History backs the caution — mid-July leaders close it out about two times in three, which is a strong hand and a long way from a coronation.
Under the leader, the silver argument is genuinely unresolved: Blue Devils and Boston Crusaders project within 0.3 of each other at Finals, which is inside the model's own uncertainty about either of them. That one gets settled in Indianapolis, not in a spreadsheet.
Bluecoats, Blue Devils and Boston Crusaders hold 95% of the gold probability between them.
Boston Crusaders, Carolina Crown, Santa Clara Vanguard are the medal bubble corps to watch in the final weeks.
Boston Crusaders (5th) has a 28% chance of breaking into the top 2.

Pick a race and read it like a stock chart. Gold, Medal, and Top Six track the podium fight; Finals is the making-the-cut race — the probability of standing in the top twelve on Saturday night, which is the number that actually matters for the bubble corps down at ranks nine through twelve.

Think a corps is one caption away from the medal stand? The What-If Machine lets you fix any corps's percussion, brass, or guard and re-run all ten thousand seasons live — and watch the whole field re-sort around the change.
2 corps can already book the late hotel checkout — the model makes them 99%+ for the top six: Bluecoats, Blue Devils. For everyone else, the next three weeks are an audition.
The live race is here: Boston Crusaders at 98.2%, Carolina Crown at 95.2%, Carolina Crown at 95.2%, Santa Clara Vanguard at 92.4%. Between the last safe chair and the first standing corps sits maybe a point of score and an entire season's worth of consequence. Every corps on this list controls its own projection — that's the good news, and the sentence that should keep their staffs up at night.
One more number worth carrying into August: the field currently spans 20.12 points top to bottom, and history says it arrives at Finals spanning about 12.9. The sheets compress. Leads shrink on their own, like everything else left out in the Indiana sun. That compression is in the model, and it's why nobody's projections up there read 100.
Trajectory fits. Each corps's scored season is fitted with a logistic curve — the S-shaped climb that describes how drum corps seasons actually mature, fast gains early, diminishing returns late. Shows are weighted by the panel that scored them: a full-field event where 15+ corps stood in front of one panel (San Antonio, the championships) counts double, a major regional counts 1.5×, a Tuesday in a small stadium counts once. Where the curve fit is under-identified — mid-season fits will happily project a corps to 105 given the chance — a plausibility guard caps remaining improvement at the historical remaining-gain budget and falls back to a damped linear projection instead.
Tier variance. Uncertainty scales with where a corps sits. Elite corps (top 3) run tight distributions — 0.7× the base noise — because their scores are the most heavily judged and the most stable. The scale widens through contenders (1.0×) and mid-pack (1.3×) to 1.6× at the bottom, where a hot night genuinely moves placements.
Compression. DCI fields shrink toward each other in August — a 21-point July spread historically arrives at Finals nearer 12.9. Every simulated season pulls scores gently toward the field mean by the historical compression ratio, and per-corps uncertainty shrinks as the season runs out of room to surprise. On top of the show-to-show noise, a trajectory-uncertainty term — three points across a full remaining season, shrinking linearly — carries the real mid-season unknowns: rewrites, staff adjustments, a caption finding another gear. It's calibrated so a mid-July leader converts at roughly the historical base rate, about two seasons in three.
Momentum. The model compares each corps's last four shows against its own season-long gain rate, adjusted for the natural late-season slowdown. Gaining faster than the declining trend says you should: accelerating, worth a small projection bump and slightly tighter noise. Slower: decelerating, the reverse. The arrows in the table are this signal.
The trials. 10,000 simulated seasons. In each, every corps draws a finals score from its projected distribution, the field compresses, scores clamp to reality, and the field is ranked. Gold, medal, and top-six projections are simple counts across all trials.
What it doesn't know. Show design and how well a closer installs in August. Staff. Weather. Which judges draw Indianapolis. Any of the reasons this activity is coached by humans instead of spreadsheets. Treat the projections as a disciplined summary of the scoreboard so far — not a prophecy. The model re-runs after every score ingest, so these numbers were current as of 2026-07-28 and will move the moment the next recap posts.
