Who's in the box, and how do they score? Tendency measures how far a judge's marks sit from each corps's season norm in the same caption. It's a quality-adjusted read on whether they run hot or cold, not an accusation of bias. Only panels confirmed against official DCI recaps are named here; chairs still being confirmed show as Panel TBD.

The Analysis Desk · Season Review

The 2026 Panel Review

349 scored performances across 44 full-panel shows, eight sheets a night, and no panel ever saw another panel's numbers. When the season ended we went back and read what the rooms themselves left behind. Not the judges, the rooms: every mark, measured against each corps's own season arc.

How to read this. For every corps and every caption we fit the season's trajectory, then asked one question of every show: did this room mark the corps who performed there above or below their own arc? Average that across the night's field and you get the room's signature, with lineup strength and the season's natural growth removed. One honest caveat before any of it: a residual cannot tell a panel apart from the night itself. Rain, wind, a hall's acoustics, a field that ate drill all night move every sheet at once, and no analysis from the outside can fully separate the two. Judging eight minutes of simultaneous excellence in real time is brutally hard work; nothing below is an accusation, and none of it names a judge.

The rooms were smaller than the arguments about them

The typical 2026 room moved a weighted total by about ±0.21 points against trend. That is real money in a sport that settles championships by tenths, but it is far smaller than the season's loudest arguments assumed, and most nights sat closer to zero than to the extremes. The outliers are worth naming. DCI Central Texas (2026-07-16) was the season's warmest room at +0.96 weighted points against trend, with Drum Corps at the Rose Bowl (+0.68) behind it. At the other end, Gold Showcase (2026-07-09) ran -0.90 and Cavalcade of Brass -0.90. A corps that hit one of those rooms mid-season picked up or gave back a chunk of score that had nothing to do with how it performed, and got it back at the next show, which is exactly why single-show score jumps make poor storylines.

Guard and percussion were the wild sheets; GE was the heavy one

Night to night, the most volatile sheets of 2026 were Percussion (±0.20 per room) and Color Guard (±0.19), the two captions where a single reader's taste has the most surface to grip. The steadiest sheet was Brass (±0.13). But the sheet gives General Effect double weight, so once the math is applied the biggest lever in any room was General Effect Visual: a warm GE chair moved a total more than a wild guard chair did.

Eight chairs, mostly eight opinions

The cleanest good news in the data: the panel structure mostly works. Across 44 rooms, the average correlation between two different captions' residuals was 0.08, which is to say close to nothing. Rooms did not run globally hot or cold; chairs disagreed with each other night after night, which is what eight independent sheets are supposed to do. The exception is a visual-book halo: GE Vis and Guard moved together (r = 0.50) more than any other pair. That is not a scandal; when a color guard is having a night, the effect sheet is watching the same show. But it means a guard-forward corps in front of a warm visual room collects the bonus twice.

Who lived and died by the room

Some corps got remarkably consistent reads all season. Others carried a caption the rooms could not agree on. The widest season-long spread belonged to The Academy's Color Guard (±0.57 against their own arc), with Seattle Cascades's Color Guard (±0.56) close behind. For those corps, the honest reading of any single night's caption number started with the question of who was in the box.

Every room of the season

Each row is a show, each column a caption. Red ran hot against the field's trend that night, blue ran cold, blank is within noise.

Method: for each corps and caption, scores are fit to the corps's own season curve; a room's signature is the average distance of that night's marks from those curves, weighted as the DCI sheet weighs captions. Shows with fewer than 4 World Class corps are excluded. Correlations are across 44 shows and should be read as tendencies, not verdicts.

Open Class judge data was not tracked during the 2026 season; this review covers World Class panels only.

How DCI Judging Works

A DCI show is not scored by one judge with one opinion. It is scored by a panel, with each judge responsible for a single caption and nothing else. Understanding that structure is the difference between "the judges liked them" and knowing exactly which chair moved a result.

Panel structure

A full World Class panel seats one judge per caption, typically eight chairs across the three books: two in General Effect, three in Visual, and three in Music. GE judges sit in the press box watching the whole picture. Analysis and proficiency judges often move down onto the field to hear and see execution up close. Because each judge owns one caption, no single person controls a corps's total; the number you see is eight independent reads added together.

Caption responsibilities

Each chair has a narrow job. The Brass judge listens only to the hornline. The Percussion judge follows the battery and pit. Color Guard scores the guard. The Visual Analysis and Music Analysis judges grade how well the book is built and taught, while the Proficiency judge grades how cleanly it is performed. The two GE judges step back and ask the biggest question of all: how much does the whole show move an audience. That is why GE carries the most weight, and why a corps can be clean everywhere and still lose on effect.

Why tendency is not bias

On this site, a judge or panel "tendency" measures how far the marks at a show sat from each corps's own season norm, then averages that across the field. A positive number means the night ran generous, a negative number means it ran strict. This is a description of calibration, not an accusation. Judges are human, panels differ, and one room can simply sit a few tenths higher than another on the same corps. Tendency helps you compare across those rooms; it does not claim anyone is playing favorites.

Panel Tendencies

Do some panels score higher than others?

For each corps at each show, we compute how far they scored from their own average at that point in the season. Averaging those residuals across all corps at a show gives the panel’s tendency. Positive means generous, negative means strict. This controls for both field strength and seasonal score escalation, so early-season panels aren’t penalized for lower raw scores.

Adjusted spread removes each panel’s tendency. If a corps scored high on a “hot” panel and low on a “cold” one, the adjusted number tells you how much of that spread is the corps vs the panel. Lower = more consistent real performance.
