It's a quality-adjusted read on whether they run hot or cold, not an accusation of bias. Judge assignments sourced from dci.org recaps and official corps channels as the season progresses.

Panel Tendencies

Do some panels score higher than others?

For each corps at each show, we compute how far they scored from their own average at that point in the season. Averaging those residuals across all corps at a show gives the panel’s tendency. Positive means generous, negative means strict. This controls for both field strength and seasonal score escalation, so early-season panels aren’t penalized for lower raw scores.

Adjusted spread removes each panel’s tendency. If a corps scored high on a “hot” panel and low on a “cold” one, the adjusted number tells you how much of that spread is the corps vs the panel. Lower = more consistent real performance.
