I have a spreadsheet that tracks head-to-head results, because of course I do, and on Jul 20 it broke. DCI McKinney: Phantom Regiment 87.8, Blue Stars 87.8. Same number. Not close — identical, to the decimal, out of a possible hundred. And the recap still listed Blue Stars 2nd and Phantom Regiment 3rd, in that order, like nothing needed explaining.

Something needs explaining. When two corps tie on total score, DCI does not flip a coin or split the placement. It goes to the sheet that measures the show as a whole: total General Effect, the two 20-point captions at the top of the recap. At DCI McKinney that read Blue Stars 35.1, Phantom Regiment 34.7. Rule applied, placement awarded, everybody on the bus by midnight.

Here is the part that should bother you, or delight you, depending on which parking lot you tailgate in. Phantom Regiment have not lost a single meeting to Blue Stars this season: 4 wins and 1 tie in 5 tries. An unbeaten record against a corps is supposed to buy you something. It bought them third place on a night they didn't lose, which is the sort of arithmetic that makes people write columns.

Watch the margin column shrink. River City Rhapsody was a 1.8-point decision; 3 meetings later the gap was under a point and a half, and at DCI McKinney it hit zero. That is not two corps trading nights. That is one corps reeling in another on a schedule you could set a watch by. Blue Stars have been closing since the series opened, and the win column hid it right up until the moment it couldn't.

There is exactly one undefeated party left in this rivalry, and it plays drums. Phantom Regiment's battery has taken percussion in all 5 recapped meetings, by an average of +0.63, and it wasn't sweating the last one either: +0.70 at McKinney while everything else on the sheet was busy defecting. The guard leans Rockford too (3–2). Downstairs, this series has never been in doubt.

Upstairs is where the lease changed hands. At McKinney, Blue Stars won both GE captions, brass, visual proficiency, and music analysis — five of the eight boxes — and Phantom Regiment still salvaged the tie on the strength of guard and that battery. Which tells you the shape of the thing: PR win the parts you can count, BS win the parts you can only feel. On most recaps those settle into an ordinary score gap. On this one they cancelled out to the third decimal, and the rulebook sided with feel.

The rule is simple and old-fashioned: tied totals go to total General Effect, the two 20-point captions that grade the show as an experience rather than as a checklist. The logic is defensible — if the math can't separate you, let the caption that measures the whole show do it. The sting is in the timing. Phantom Regiment had won the GE column in 4 of this season's 5 recapped meetings. The one night GE was the entire ballgame was the first night all season Blue Stars took it.

And it wasn't a judge's whim; it was a trend arriving on time. Blue Stars' GE total went from 34.2 at DCI Southwestern Championship to 35.1 two nights later — up 0.9 — while Phantom Regiment's went from 34.8 to 34.7. One show is being rewarded for what it's becoming. The other is being paid what it already was. If you want to know which direction a rivalry is pointing, ignore the totals and watch whose GE line the judges keep revising upward.

Zoom out and the tiebreak stops being trivia and starts being the whole race in miniature. The model projects these two within a rounding error of each other at Finals: Phantom Regiment's median lands at 94.31, Blue Stars' at 93.83. Phantom Regiment get to Saturday's top six in 9.2% of simulated seasons, Blue Stars in 3.9%. Ten thousand tries, and the computer mostly shrugs.

Which means the sixth-place trophy conversation may come down to exactly the coin this piece is about. If these two arrive in Indianapolis still glued together — and every trend line says they will — the corps that owns GE owns the tiebreak, and the corps that owns the tiebreak owns the seed. Phantom Regiment can keep winning drums by half a point a night. The rulebook has already told them, in writing, which half point it cares about.

The rematch schedule: DCI Kentucky in Lexington on Aug 3; then DCI World Championship Prelims in Indianapolis on Aug 6. That gives Phantom Regiment 1 more regular-tour night to reopen a gap before the one that seeds Finals.

The falsifiable version, so you can grade this desk later: if Phantom Regiment beat Blue Stars on total GE at their next shared show, the McKinney tiebreak was a one-night panel opinion and the unbeaten record still means what it says. If Blue Stars take GE again, the series record is a lagging indicator and the passing lane is already open. One recap settles it. We'll be refreshing.
