Salem and Huntington — July 29
Two panels ran the same Wednesday night. Carolina Crown headlined Summer Music Games of Southwest Virginia in Salem; Santa Clara Vanguard took DCI Huntington across the state line. Both boards in full, every corps carrying its move — and the three threads that matter heading into August.
| # | Corps | Score | Move |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Carolina Crown | 94.700 | +1.40 |
| 2 | Blue Stars | 91.000 | +0.90 |
| 3 | Spirit of Atlanta | 86.100 | +0.85 |
| 4 | Crossmen | 82.600 | +0.50 |
| 5 | Music City | 81.350 | +1.30 |
| 6 | The Academy | 81.100 | +1.30 |
Crown’s 94.700 is the number the night will be remembered by: a season high, up 1.40 in twenty-four hours, and close enough to the front that the gap to Bluecoats is now 4.40. How much of the jump is theirs and how much was the room is its own story — we ran the caption subtraction in Crown Close the Gap.
Underneath, Blue Stars kept climbing: 91.0, +0.90 on the night, and a 7th-straight outing clear of 90 — a line they had never touched before this stretch. Spirit of Atlanta, Crossmen, Music City and The Academy filled out the card behind them.
| # | Corps | Score | Move |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Santa Clara Vanguard | 92.900 | +0.95 |
| 2 | The Cavaliers | 89.450 | +1.73 |
| 3 | Madison Scouts | 84.750 | +1.75 |
| 4 | Seattle Cascades | 79.150 | +4.12 |
Santa Clara Vanguard had the room to themselves at the top — 92.9, +0.95 off their last time out, and 3.45 clear of second. A tidy night, if a lightly contested one.
Second is where the real news was. The Cavaliers’ 89.450 was a +1.73 jump — the biggest late-calendar move anyone in the top tier has posted, and it was broad, not a single caption running hot. That one gets its own page too: The Cavaliers’ Quiet Surge. Madison Scouts kept their own climb going behind them, and Seattle Cascades rounded out the four.
The front is a rounding error. Crown at 4.40 back means the top of the 2026 class is closer than it has been all summer — though the two sheets are from different nights, so the real head-to-head waits for a shared panel.
The Cavaliers found a gear. A +1.73 step this late, spread across the sheet, is the sort of move that reorders a Prelims seed if it holds.
Blue Stars belong above 90. What read as a ceiling a week ago is starting to look like a floor.
Scores from DCI and CompetitionSuite recaps, exhibitions excluded. “Move” compares each corps’ total to its own previous scored outing, which may be several days back. Gaps to the field leader compare each corps’ most recent number and may bridge different nights and panels.
