Crown Close the Gap
Carolina Crown post a season-high 97.038 at Salem, a +0.2 overnight jump that leaves them 2.06 behind the Bluecoats — the closest they have stood to the front all summer. The scoreboard read is clean. The caption sheet asks for one honest subtraction before you spend the whole 1.4.
The number is real and the position is new. Crown’s 97.038 is their best of the season, +0.24 clear of the 96.8 they posted the night before at DCI World Championship Semifinals, and it pulls them to within 2.06 of Bluecoats at the top of the field. A show ago that gap ran better than a point and a half. So the headline earns itself: the front of the 2026 class is now a rounding error wide.
What the headline hides is where the 0.2 was built. One caption did most of the visible work — and it is the one caption you should trust least on a single night.

Visual Proficiency carried the sheet on paper: -0.0, the biggest box on the card. But that box did not move for Crown alone. Across the 12 corps on the Salem panel, GE Visual rose an average of -0.10 against each group’s previous outing — the whole room graded up in that caption. Set Crown’s -0.0 against the room’s tide and the part that is theirs and not the panel’s is closer to +0.08. That is not nothing. It is also not seven tenths.
The gains that carry no such asterisk sit in the music book. GE Music, Brass, Music Analysis and Percussion added +0.1 between them, none of them a caption that swung field-wide on the night. That is the durable half of the jump — the half that should still be there in a colder room. A soft panel lifts a total; it rarely routes the leftover gain through the strongest part of the sheet. Crown’s did.

Crown sit second, 2.06 back — but the number above them is several nights older than the one they just posted, set at Aug 8 to Crown’s Aug 8. Bluecoats have not been on a panel since to answer it. That is the standing caveat of a split-calendar week: the gap is measured between a fresh Crown sheet and a stale one at the top, so it reads closer than a same-night comparison would. It closes the distance without settling the order.
Scores from DCI and CompetitionSuite recaps, exhibitions excluded. Caption comparisons run between consecutive full sheets on different judging panels and carry ordinary chair-to-chair variance; raw sub-caption values are unweighted and do not sum to the published total. The field GE Visual average compares every corps on the DCI World Championship Finals panel against its own previous outing. Board shows each corps’s most recent scored show, which is why dates differ across rows.
