The 2026 Season
Seven weeks, 49 scored shows, and twelve corps that walked into Lucas Oil Stadium as completely different organizations than the ones that opened in late June. Here is the whole year: who travelled furthest, which captions did the travelling, how close the model got, and what each of the top twelve carries into the winter.
The thing nobody outside this activity understands about a drum corps season is how much of it is construction. A corps does not show up in June with a finished product and defend it for two months. It shows up with about seventy percent of a show and builds the rest in parking lots, at two in the morning, in a different state every night.
Which means the interesting number is not where anybody finished. It is how far they moved.
| Pl | Corps | Opened | Date | Finals | Gain | Shows |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Blue Devils | 75.650 | Jun 27 | 97.500 | +21.85 | 18 |
| 9 | Colts | 69.700 | Jul 1 | 90.125 | +20.43 | 18 |
| 7 | Phantom Regiment | 72.650 | Jun 27 | 92.600 | +19.95 | 19 |
| 11 | Troopers | 67.850 | Jun 27 | 86.950 | +19.10 | 19 |
| 12 | Blue Knights | 67.550 | Jun 27 | 86.175 | +18.62 | 19 |
| 5 | Santa Clara Vanguard | 77.550 | Jun 30 | 95.025 | +17.48 | 19 |
| 8 | The Cavaliers | 75.250 | Jul 5 | 92.175 | +16.93 | 17 |
| 1 | Bluecoats | 82.200 | Jul 3 | 99.100 | +16.90 | 18 |
| 6 | Blue Stars | 77.400 | Jul 5 | 94.137 | +16.74 | 19 |
| 10 | Spirit of Atlanta | 72.850 | Jul 7 | 88.588 | +15.74 | 19 |
| 3 | Carolina Crown | 82.100 | Jul 7 | 97.038 | +14.94 | 16 |
| 4 | Boston Crusaders | 83.050 | Jul 7 | 95.675 | +12.62 | 15 |
Blue Devils travelled furthest: +21.85 across 18 scored performances, from 75.650 on Jun 27 to a silver medal. Colts were next at +20.43, and Phantom Regiment third at +19.95.
The caveat belongs in the body rather than the footnote, because without it this table lies to you. Corps did not all open on the same night. Blue Devils debuted on Jun 27; Boston Crusaders did not score until Jul 7. Roughly ten extra days of tour is worth several points at that end of the calendar, so the gain column measures distance travelled, not quality gained.
It also punishes anybody who opened well. Boston Crusaders put up 83.050 in their first show of the year, the highest debut in this field, and finished with the smallest gain in it at +12.62. There is a ceiling at the top of this sheet and the corps that start closest to it have the least room to climb.
| Caption | Field average | Largest gain | Smallest |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Effect Music | +3.804 | +4.750 | +2.475 |
| Brass | +3.617 | +4.700 | +2.450 |
| Music Analysis | +3.477 | +4.300 | +2.650 |
| General Effect Visual | +3.471 | +4.450 | +2.275 |
| Percussion | +3.450 | +4.650 | +2.550 |
| Visual Analysis | +3.433 | +4.400 | +2.300 |
| Visual Proficiency | +3.404 | +4.000 | +2.700 |
| Color Guard | +3.283 | +4.400 | +2.400 |
General Effect Music moved most, at +3.804 on average, and Color Guard moved least at +3.283. The spread between the busiest caption and the quietest one is only 0.521, which is smaller than it looks like it should be.
That flatness is the actual finding. There is a story people tell where corps arrive in June with the music finished and spend the summer cleaning visual, or the reverse, and it is not what the 2026 sheets show. Everything went up, at roughly the same rate, everywhere. Season long improvement in this activity is not a targeted repair job. It is the whole organism getting better at once.
There is no pre season forecast to grade here, because the model did not exist before Jul 26. Inventing one now and then congratulating it would be worthless. So the honest test is the earliest run on record, generated with roughly two weeks of tour still to go, checked against what actually happened.
| Finish | Corps | Projected place | Projected score | Actual | Error |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bluecoats | 1 hit | 99.15 | 99.100 | -0.05 |
| 2 | Blue Devils | 2 hit | 98.02 | 97.500 | -0.52 |
| 3 | Carolina Crown | 3 hit | 98.02 | 97.038 | -0.98 |
| 4 | Boston Crusaders | 4 hit | 97.37 | 95.675 | -1.70 |
| 5 | Santa Clara Vanguard | 5 hit | 96.74 | 95.025 | -1.72 |
| 6 | Blue Stars | 6 hit | 94.40 | 94.137 | -0.26 |
| 7 | Phantom Regiment | 7 hit | 94.34 | 92.600 | -1.74 |
| 8 | The Cavaliers | 8 hit | 92.41 | 92.175 | -0.23 |
| 9 | Colts | 9 hit | 92.08 | 90.125 | -1.96 |
| 10 | Spirit of Atlanta | 12 | 88.25 | 88.588 | +0.34 |
| 11 | Troopers | 10 | 89.87 | 86.950 | -2.92 |
| 12 | Blue Knights | 11 | 88.75 | 86.175 | -2.58 |
9 of 12 placements called exactly, 11 of 12 within a single position, two weeks out. That is a good result and it should be read with some suspicion, because by late July the order at the top of this activity is largely settled and a model that predicts continuity in a stable system is not doing anything clever.
The score error is the more useful number. 1.25 of a point on average, and it runs in one direction: corps outscored their late July projections almost across the board. The model consistently underestimated how much a field improves in the final two weeks of a season. That is the correction to carry into 2027.
Bluecoats finished the year at 99.100, the only score of ninety nine anybody reached in 2026, having climbed +16.90 from a 82.200 opener. They won four of the five caption awards and the one they lost went to the hornline in third. There is no obvious weakness on that sheet to attack, which is the problem the other eleven design teams are sitting down with in September.
The four corps behind them each leave with a different unanswered question. The silver medalists spent July being called clinical and ended the season swinging harder than anybody; whether that was the show finally landing or one extraordinary night is a 2027 question. The bronze medalists own the best hornline in the activity and a percussion caption that finished eighth, which is a solvable problem and an expensive one. Fourth place won on presentation and will hear about it all winter. Fifth place was the steadiest corps in the top half and could not find the half point that would have changed the conversation.
Below the medal stand, the story of 2026 is a middle that got genuinely crowded. Sixth through ninth covered 4.012 points, and three of the four corps in that band posted top four season gains. None of them are finished.
That is the season. It started in a high school stadium in late June with a corps scoring 75.650 and it ended in Indianapolis with a 99.100, and every single point in between was built by teenagers in a parking lot at two in the morning.
See you in June.
