Start with the single most remarkable fact of the 2026 World Championship, which went almost entirely unremarked in the building.

Nobody passed anybody.

The order that came out of Thursday's Prelims is the order that stood on Saturday night, first through eleventh, without a single exception. Three nights, three different panels, thirty six scored performances, and not one corps in the top eleven changed places with another. The only movement in the entire championship happened at the twelfth seat, where Blue Knights climbed past Pacific Crest at Semifinals and ended somebody's season doing it.

That is not evidence of a lazy panel. Every corps moved, some of them a lot. They just all moved in formation.

A recap prints eight caption scores, each out of twenty, and a total out of one hundred. The total is not their average. General Effect carries forty of those hundred points across two captions. The six performance captions carry the other sixty between them.

Which means a tenth of a point in General Effect Music is worth exactly twice a tenth in percussion. Every caption number on this page is therefore shown twice: the raw movement off the printed mark, and the weighted movement, which is what it was actually worth against the total. Counting captions without weighting them tells you the wrong story about where a night came from.

The clearest proof on Saturday is Spirit of Atlanta. They improved in 4 captions and gave ground in only 3, and their score went down 0.175. The three losses included General Effect Visual at -0.500, which is a General Effect caption at full weight, and the four gains were all in the half weight book. Win more captions, lose the night.

Percussion was the caption the field gained most in on the last night, at +0.133 on average. General Effect Visual was the one that went backward hardest, at -0.104. That second number is the more useful one: a caption where most of the field lost ground on Finals night is a caption where the panel got stricter, not one where twelve corps simultaneously got worse.

Caption trophies are decided on the championship average of all three nights, not on Finals alone. In one caption those two readings name different corps, and that gap is worth showing because it is where most of the post show arguments came from.

Carolina Crown led the brass caption at Prelims, at 19.500. They led it again at Semifinals, at 19.500. Blue Devils sat behind them both nights, at 19.250 and then 19.100.

On Saturday, Blue Devils put +0.400 on their brass mark in one night and landed on 19.500. Carolina Crown came off theirs by 0.050, to 19.450.

So Blue Devils took the night by 0.050 and Carolina Crown took the trophy, because two dominant earlier nights carry an average that one strong evening cannot overturn. Anyone who walked out of that stadium certain Carolina Crown had the best brass of the championship was right. Anyone reading the Finals recap alone and concluding Blue Devils was also right, about a different question.

Twelve corps, thirty six performances, and a finish order that never moved above the bubble. It would be easy to read that as a panel copying its own homework, and some people in that stadium did read it that way out loud.

The captions say otherwise. Corps moved in every direction on every sheet all week. Blue Stars put +0.799 on the board on the last night and did not gain a place for it. Troopers lost 1.000 and did not lose one either. The gaps in this field were simply wider than one night of movement, which is a statement about how the season was built rather than about how it was judged.
