Colts, Plus Two-Two
Twenty corps performed on July 25 across two stadiums. Nineteen of them moved less than Colts, who gained 2.175 in a single night and finished sixth on a thirteen-corps sheet in Atlanta. The three-corps-two-chairs fight this desk mapped two weeks ago now has a corps walking away from it — upward.
Score movement in late July usually arrives in tenths. The field is compressing, the sheets are tightening, and a half-point night is a headline. Colts gained -0.23 — from 90.35 in Murfreesboro to 90.125 in Atlanta, one day apart.
And it wasn’t a soft-panel gift. This came on the thirteen-corps Atlanta sheet, the deepest field of the weekend, judged against the entire top four. Sixth place on that sheet — ahead of Troopers by two full points, ahead of Blue Knights by three — is a different kind of statement than sixth at a four-corps regional.

Look at the bottom two spotlighted rows, because the story is the divergence, not just the surge. On the same sheet, in the same stadium, on the same night Colts gained two-plus: Troopers gave back half a point and Blue Knights gave back three quarters. Both had climbed all week at smaller regionals; Atlanta’s deeper panel repriced them. A tie in direction would have kept the trio’s argument alive. Opposite directions ended it.

3 of 8 captions up, and no single caption carrying the freight. That distribution is the tell. A one-caption spike reads as a judge’s taste or a cleaned ballad; a whole-sheet lift reads as a show that got better everywhere at once — which is what a late-July rewrite or a cleaning breakthrough looks like on paper. Whole-sheet lifts also tend to survive the next panel, because there’s no single generous number for a different judge to claw back.

The bubble math confirms what the spread implies. The Monte Carlo now makes Colts 100.0% to march Saturday night in Indianapolis — functionally a lock, indistinguishable from Cavaliers above them. Troopers hold 77.4%, Blue Knights 16.2% — and the corps crowding up from below (Spirit of Atlanta at 100.0%, Pacific Crest at 72.3%, Madison Scouts at 34.2%) mean the two remaining chairs now have five corps circling them. Colts’ new problem is a better problem: the 2.05 up to Cavaliers, which was 3.5 one show ago. That’s not a bubble fight. That’s an eighth-place fight.
Scores from DCI and CompetitionSuite recaps, exhibitions excluded. Single-night change compares each corps’s July 25 total to its own previous scored outing, whichever show that was — a same-corps comparison, so different panels on different nights apply equally to every row.
