The Colts Are Real
Five days, four nights of scores: 84.3 in Evansville, 84.9 in Murfreesboro, 87.075 in Atlanta, 88.0 in Winston-Salem. The desk asked one question of NightBEAT — hold 87 or hand it back — and Colts answered by adding to it. They now sit ahead of The Cavaliers on the season board without having beaten them once, and the projection model has, for the first time all year, decided that order is correct.
Yesterday’s surge piece closed on a published number: hold 87.0 against the NightBEAT field and Atlanta was a floor, not a flare. Slip toward 85 and the biggest single-night move of the summer was a soft-panel souvenir. Grading time: 88.0, fifth on an eleven-corps sheet with the entire top four in the building. The mirage reading is dead. What’s left is a corps that has banked +3.7 across four consecutive nights of scores in five days.
One fluke night is a judge’s mood. The same story told by four different panels in four states is not a mood. It’s an edit that landed.

Every caption moved up — but not equally. The two General Effect sheets supplied +2.4 of the +3.7 total: 65% of the climb from a quarter of the sheet. That ratio matters because GE is where judges score the show, not the performers — design, pacing, payoff. Cleaning buys you tenths in proficiency captions. A GE surge this size in late July is the signature of content: an ending rewritten, a ballad re-staged, a moment that didn’t exist two weeks ago. Performance captions rise on repetition. Effect captions rise on decisions — and effect is what’s carrying the freight.

5 meetings, 5 losses, gaps between two and nearly four points — and yet the board now reads Colts eighth, Cavaliers ninth. That’s what happens when one trend line bends up while the other bends down: Cavaliers gave back 0.675 at the Midwestern Championship the same weekend Colts were adding three. A pass on trajectory is provisional by nature — no sheet has ratified it — and the schedule keeps them apart until August. Until then the argument is conducted entirely through the scoreboard, where Colts are currently winning it.

From 3.7 in San Antonio to 1.9 in Winston-Salem — the gap to sixth place has halved in eight days, and these two share a sheet again Friday in Allentown. Blue Stars are not slipping; they set a season high Sunday. Colts are simply gaining faster than the corps ahead of them can add. That’s the only way anyone moves in late July, when every corps in the country is improving and the standings measure second derivatives.
| Make Finals | Top 6 | Projected at Indy | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before (Jul 21) | 90.0% | 1.3% | 91.15 |
| Now (Jul 28) | 94.1% | 0.8% | 92.65 |
Before the run began, the model gave Colts a 90.0% shot at marching Saturday night — meaning one simulated season in ten still ended with a Friday-night exit. Today it’s 94.1%, which is the model’s way of saying the bubble conversation is over, and its Indianapolis projection now puts Colts at 92.65 to Cavaliers’ 92.45 — the first nightly run of the season to project Colts ahead of them where it counts. Models don’t believe in momentum; they believe in data points. Colts just handed this one four in a row pointing the same direction.
Tuesday in Annapolis puts Colts on a panel with Blue Devils and Boston Crusaders — the deepest top end they’ll have faced since Atlanta, and a chance to see whether 88 survives proximity to 93. Friday’s Eastern Classic in Allentown puts Blue Stars back on the same sheet with that 1.9 on the line. Hold the number Tuesday and close Friday, and the conversation stops being “are Colts real” and becomes “how high does this go.” The desk’s answer to the first question is already in the headline.
Scores from DCI and CompetitionSuite recaps, exhibitions excluded. GE share compares the two General Effect captions’ combined gain to the total-score gain across Colts’ last four shows; caption sheets are per-panel, so cross-show comparisons carry normal judge-to-judge variance. Finals probabilities and Indianapolis projections from the DCI Forge Monte Carlo model, 10,000 trials per nightly run; the “before” column is the last run generated before the four-night run’s first score entered the data.
