DCI FORGE

A DCI score is not one number a judge picks. It is built from eight captions, each scored by its own judge on its own sheet, then added together. Understanding the parts is the difference between "they won" and knowing why they won.

The eight captions

Every corps is scored in three books that split into eight captions:

• General Effect (GE): GE Music and GE Visual. This is the "so what" score, judging how well the whole show lands as a performance, not just whether it is clean.
• Visual: Visual Proficiency, Visual Analysis, and Color Guard. How well the drill, body, and guard are executed and designed.
• Music: Brass, Music Analysis, and Percussion. How well the hornline, the musical book, and the battery and pit are executed and designed.

Why GE counts double

The two GE captions are weighted to about 40 percent of the total score, far more than any other single book. GE is the tiebreaker that decides close shows: two corps can be nearly even on execution, and the one with the stronger overall effect wins. When you see a corps "win on GE," that is the heaviest lever on the sheet doing its job.

Why a 0.3 gap changes meaning over the summer

In early July, scores are low and spread wide because shows are unfinished and panels are calibrating. A 0.3 gap in that window means almost nothing. By August the field compresses, corps stop making big weekly jumps, and the same 0.3 becomes a real, hard-to-close margin. Same number, very different weight, depending on the date.

Why panels are not comparable across venues

Different shows use different judging panels, and every judge calibrates a little differently. A 87.5 in one city and a 87.5 in another were handed out by different people on different nights, so the raw totals are not directly comparable. What travels is the gap between corps judged by the same panel on the same night, which is why we lean on head-to-head margins rather than absolute scores.
