How to Read a DCI Scoresheet

A DCI score is not one number a judge picks. It is built from eight captions, each scored by its own judge on its own sheet, then added together. Understanding the parts is the difference between "they won" and knowing why they won.

The eight captions

Every corps is scored in three books that split into eight captions:

  • General Effect (GE): GE Music and GE Visual. This is the "so what" score, judging how well the whole show lands as a performance, not just whether it is clean.
  • Visual: Visual Proficiency, Visual Analysis, and Color Guard. How well the drill, body, and guard are executed and designed.
  • Music: Brass, Music Analysis, and Percussion. How well the hornline, the musical book, and the battery and pit are executed and designed.

Why GE counts double

The two GE captions are weighted to about 40 percent of the total score, far more than any other single book. GE is the tiebreaker that decides close shows: two corps can be nearly even on execution, and the one with the stronger overall effect wins. When you see a corps "win on GE," that is the heaviest lever on the sheet doing its job.

Why a 0.3 gap changes meaning over the summer

In early July, scores are low and spread wide because shows are unfinished and panels are calibrating. A 0.3 gap in that window means almost nothing. By August the field compresses, corps stop making big weekly jumps, and the same 0.3 becomes a real, hard-to-close margin. Same number, very different weight, depending on the date.

Why panels are not comparable across venues

Different shows use different judging panels, and every judge calibrates a little differently. A 87.5 in one city and a 87.5 in another were handed out by different people on different nights, so the raw totals are not directly comparable. What travels is the gap between corps judged by the same panel on the same night, which is why we lean on head-to-head margins rather than absolute scores.

Quick glossary

  • Recap: the official DCI score report for a show, listing every corps and every caption.
  • Sheets: the individual caption score sheets the judges fill out.
  • Tick: a small deduction for an execution error, the old term for getting marked down.
  • Spread: the point gap between two corps or between placements.

New to the activity? Our DCI, Explained glossary covers captions, GE, the sheets, hornline, battery, pit, age-outs, and how Finals week works.

Below is the official recap for DCI Huntington, verified against the DCI score report. Totals combine all eight captions; the GE, Visual, and Music columns group the sheets so you can see where the show was decided. Tap "How to Read a DCI Scoresheet" above if any of the columns are unfamiliar.

DCI Huntington ran both divisions on the same field. They are scored on the same sheet by the same panel but placed separately, so these are two standings, not one. The Open Class season is tracked here.

Would You Look This Up Again?

Fan Effect Index · reader vote

The judges scored these performances on craft. This asks the other question, the one a scoresheet has no column for: months from now, would you go back and watch it again? Pick a corps from tonight's lineup, answer yes or no, and then the part that matters more than the answer: say why. The why is required. A bot will click a radio button all day. A bot will not write you a sentence about why a drum corps show is worth watching twice. That sentence is the whole door policy here, which is why there is no puzzle to solve and no box to tick.

2. Would you look it up again?

What would you actually go back for, or what kept it from landing? A moment, a section, a hit, a soloist, the way it ended. One or two sentences is plenty.
