Fit every mark this season against each corps's own season trend and the leftover, the residual, is a room's read versus the season consensus. Most rooms landed close to neutral; a few corps-captions swung more than two full points depending on who was in the box, and the season's biggest storyline on the scoreboard, Carolina Crown's rise past Boston Crusaders, holds up even after the room is subtracted out.

The evidence
Across 49 shows and 2,632 caption marks fit against each corps's own season trend line, the typical room read 0.16 points off season-neutral. Most nights, the room was not the story. (2026 season score archive, all World Class shows)

No corps-caption pairing swung more room to room than The Academy's Color Guard: a 2.13-point spread between its friendliest and toughest read across 17 marks, a standard deviation of 0.623. (The Academy, Color Guard, full season)
The single widest chair-to-chair swing on one corps-caption belonged to Troopers' GE Visual. A midseason regional, DCI Birmingham on July 24, gave the same book a 17.5; the DCI World Championship Finals itself, on August 8, gave it a 16.7. The steadiest read of the season was Bluecoats' Color Guard: a standard deviation of just 0.125 across 17 marks, the tightest room-to-room agreement of any corps-caption pairing. (Bluecoats, Color Guard, full season)

Carolina Crown trailed Boston Crusaders by as much as a full point in the room at DCI Houston on July 17. By the DCI World Championship Finals on August 8, Crown's raw margin over Boston was +1.363; subtracting the room's own contribution (+0.41, by the trend-line comparison) leaves a season-adjusted margin of +0.95. How the numbers are weighted
General Effect counts twice. The two effect captions carry 40 of the 100 points and the six performance captions carry 60, so a tenth moved in effect is worth two tenths moved in percussion. Every weighted figure in this piece is scaled that way; the unweighted caption marks are printed as the recap prints them.
