The trucks are unloaded, the uniforms are back on hangers, and the 2026 season is officially archive material. Finals night in Indianapolis on August 8 settled the placements, but it didn't settle much of anything caption by caption. Seven of the eight subcaptions had been decided well before that, and one of them changed hands with the ink barely dry.

Bluecoats won the World Championship at 99.1, their second straight title, and the caption sheet underneath that score is about as one-sided as a sheet gets: Bluecoats topped General Effect Music, General Effect Visual, Visual Proficiency, Visual Analysis, Color Guard, Percussion, and Music Analysis. Seven of eight. The only caption that didn't say Bluecoats belonged to Blue Devils, and it wasn't close to a formality. Carolina Crown had owned it for two nights running.

The Effect Captions: No Contest

Bluecoats' 19.95 in GE Music and 19.9 in GE Visual at Finals were both the widest margins on the sheet. Blue Devils, the second-place corps overall, sat six and four tenths back in those two captions respectively (19.45 and 19.45). Effect is worth 40 of the 100 points on a DCI sheet. GE1 and GE2 count double the six performance captions, so a corps that runs the table there is deciding the placement before the performance captions even get compared.

Visual: Also Bluecoats, Also Comfortably

Visual Proficiency and Visual Analysis went the same way: Bluecoats 19.9 and 19.7, with Carolina Crown the closest chaser in VP at 19.65 and Blue Devils the closest in VA at 19.6. Color Guard was the tightest of the visual captions: Bluecoats 19.8 to Blue Devils' 19.7, a single tenth. It still landed on the same side of the sheet as everything else in the visual box.

Percussion and Music Analysis: The Pattern Holds

Percussion had the widest field of the night: Bluecoats' 19.8 beat Santa Clara Vanguard's 19.5 for the caption, with Blue Devils back at 19.35. The corps that finished second overall was only fourth on the percussion sheet. Music Analysis was Bluecoats again at 19.9, with Carolina Crown the nearest corps at 19.625.

Brass: The One Caption With a Story

This is the caption worth the whole recap. At Prelims and again at Semifinals, Carolina Crown held Brass outright at 19.5 both nights, ahead of both Bluecoats (19.35, then 19.35 again) and Blue Devils (19.25, then a dip to 19.1). Going into Finals, Crown had won the caption twice and Blue Devils hadn't come within four tenths of it either night.

Finals flipped it. Blue Devils' brass score climbed to 19.5, four tenths in one performance, while Crown eased back to 19.45. Bluecoats' brass score barely moved (19.4) and still finished third in its own winning performance. Blue Devils left Indianapolis with the runner-up trophy and the one caption trophy Bluecoats didn't take, on a number that didn't exist until the last night of the season.

What the Archive Says Now

Off-season opens with the sheet as the record: a corps that won seven captions outright and the title that comes with them, and a two-night held lead in the eighth caption that got erased in one performance. That's the season in the numbers. No press release changes it and no highlight reel replaces it. The archive is what's left, and this is what it says.
