They had been knocked down a spot at Prelims the night before. Thursday, Blue Stars finished ahead of them for the first time all season, by 137 thousandths, and this desk wrote a whole short about how unstable a number that was. Friday, Phantom came back out into the same building with alumni in the seats and answered it the only way a drum corps can.

Then the recap posted. 93.063 on Thursday. 93.012 on Friday. Seventh place, held. The show of the night, on the sheet, was worth -0.051.

To be precise about “barely moved,” because it is the kind of phrase people throw around: 7 of the 12 finalists posted a bigger number Friday than they did Thursday. Phantom ranked 9 of 12 on the night’s movement. They did not merely fail to surge. They were one of the 5 corps in the Finals field who finished the evening below where they started it.

There is the answer, and it is not the one the concourse was shouting. The effect book went up. General Effect is the pair of captions that ask whether the show landed, whether it built, whether it was worth watching, and Phantom gained +0.225 there in twenty four hours. The panel was in the same building as everybody else. They felt it and they wrote it down.

And then the craft book took back 0.276, which is more than effect gave. That is the whole story of Friday night for this corps. Not a panel that missed the moment. A panel that credited the moment and then, on the six sheets that ask how cleanly it was done, found more to deduct than the moment was worth.

Of the 3 captions that fell, the biggest fall was the color guard: 18.600 on Thursday to 18.300 on Friday, a drop of 0.300 worth 0.150 against the total. On the night a fan in the stands described that guard as being in another dimension, it was the line on the recap that cost them the most.

Here is the fact that makes Friday genuinely hard to sit with. Even after the craft book took 0.276 out of Phantom’s night, they still finished ahead of Blue Stars on it, 55.862 to 55.837, by 0.025. Six captions measuring execution, and the corps in seventh won them collectively over the corps in sixth.

Phantom did not lose Friday night because they were dirty. They lost it on the two captions that ask how much the show landed, where Blue Stars were credited with 0.350 more effect, on the night their show landed harder than anybody’s in that stadium. That is a strange sentence to be able to write from a recap, and it is the reason this package leads with a piece disputing the result rather than a piece explaining it.

Their best single night of the season was +3.750, at Drums Across Nebraska on Jul 1. Nothing about Friday reads like that on paper. Everything about Friday read like that in the building.

There is one more show. Phantom Regiment march into Finals seventh, 0.326 behind the corps directly above them, carrying the better craft book, and a stadium that is going to be extremely loud when they hit the field. If any result this weekend is going to move on feel, it is that one.
