The loud stories at the top of a season write themselves: the corps trading the lead, the corps that just crossed a round number. Phantom Regiment have done neither, which is roughly why the 92.600 at Indianapolis has gone unremarked. It should not have. A corps that opened the summer at 72.65 is now inside a length of the fifth-place number, and it arrived not on one loud night but on a line that has bent upward almost every time out.

Every box on the sheet moved up, which by itself says the show got better and not just luckier. But the number that carries the story is Visual Proficiency: 18.50 to 18.60, a +0.1 swing on a night the rest of the sheet climbed in tenths. That box had been Phantom’s soft spot all summer — the caption where cleaner corps put distance on them — and the East Coast reading is the first time it sits level with the rest of their book instead of dragging behind it. When a corps’ weakest line stops being weak, the total does exactly what Phantom’s just did.

The rest fills in the case. GE and the music captions all nudged up together, so nothing here rests on a lone generous read; the gain is spread the way real improvement is. The standing caveat applies — DCI World Championship Semifinals and Indianapolis were different chairs, and any one box can wobble a tenth on that alone — but a wobble does not push a whole sheet the same direction, and a wobble does not close a season-long caption gap in a single night.

The medal picture is not the honest frame for Phantom — the top three are up the road, and the board says so plainly. The right frame is the fifth-and-sixth fight, and there they are squarely in it. Blue Stars hold the spot ahead by 1.54, a margin thin enough that one clean run reorders it. Below, The Cavaliers sit 0.42 back — close enough to matter, far enough that the cushion is real tonight. The two names most often reached for around Phantom sit on the wrong side of that fight in both directions: Boston Crusaders, at 94.70, are two-and-a-half points of clear air above and not this week’s measuring stick, while the Cavaliers — the corps reputation likes to pair with Phantom — are nearly three points back at 89.45. Phantom’s real fight is narrower than either: Vanguard just above, Blue Stars just below, a two-corps race for fifth, and they are the ones climbing into it.
