Corps do not usually announce their absence twice. The Mandarins sat out the 2026 season on what the organization called a strategic hiatus, and for most of the summer the easiest thing to believe was the quiet kind of worry the activity has learned from watching other corps go dark: that a pause has a way of becoming permanent.

Then, on July 4, the board of Mandarins Performing Arts voted, and the wording of the announcement is worth reading closely. Not "exploring options." Not "assessing feasibility." A unanimous vote to begin the process with Drum Corps International toward returning to the field for the 2027 season. In an activity where organizations tend to announce outcomes and hide process, the Mandarins have done the opposite all year: they published the plan, the people, and the price tag, and asked their community to watch them work through it.

What went dark, exactly

It matters what kind of corps stepped off the field, because it says what kind of corps intends to step back on. This is not an Open Class project finding its footing. The archive shows the Mandarins as a World Championship finalist in back-to-back seasons: 2023 brought 6th place at 93.775, and 2024 brought 7th place at 92.150. A corps that finished 7th at the 2024 World Championship went on hiatus not as a failing organization but as one choosing to stop before it became one. The people carrying it

The return has names attached, and it has had them since February, months before the board formalized anything. A Drum Corps Steering Committee, led by Mandarins alum Dr. Anna Keck, was formed to work the problem: not to relive the old model, but to build a plan that a 2027 corps can actually run on. Alongside the committee, the organization named its senior leadership for the return: JW Koester as Senior Director and Santiago Sabado as Senior Associate Director. The February announcement carried one more number worth holding onto: at that point the return campaign had raised $100,000 of a stated $350,000 goal. The year they refused to disappear

Here is the detail that separates this hiatus from the ones the activity remembers badly: the Mandarins spent their dark year behaving like an organization, not an absence. On 2026-07-03, in the middle of a season they were not part of, they hosted the DCI Capital Classic in Sacramento, CA, a World Class show this site scored like any other: 4 corps on the bill, Bluecoats winning the night at 82.2. The corps was off the field and the organization was still running a piece of the tour. They ran a leadership camp over the summer. And on August 15 they launched something new: the Mandarins Parade Corps, a percussion and color guard program for performers ages 11 to 17 in the Sacramento region, open to any experience level.

Nothing about a return year is guaranteed, and a corps that has been off the field for a season will have to rebuild things a spreadsheet cannot show.
