That is the setup that makes Aug 30 worth a page. Answering a challenge and building a lead in still air are different tests, and Bluecoats had just been handed the first one.

They cleared it with room to spare. The 99.100 at Indianapolis is a +0.54 step off DCI World Championship Semifinals, their largest of the back half of July, and it is the season’s first 99 from anyone.

The two numbers in Crown’s column are the same because Crown last competed on Aug 8; the movement is entirely on the Bluecoats line. A 1.52 margin is the kind that a single warm panel can erase, and had Bluecoats matched their old number the story tonight would be a dead heat at the top. Instead the margin roughly widened — 1.52 to 2.06 — and the question of who leads went quiet again.

A jump of this size can come two ways. One caption runs hot and drags the total with it; or the whole product rises a little at once. This is the second kind. 7 of the 8 boxes gained, led by Music Analysis (+0.3) and GE Music (+0.1), and both General Effect captions climbed together for +0.20 of the move — the part of the sheet that rewards a show for asking more of itself, not merely cleaning what it already had.

The panel caveat is the usual one: DCI World Championship Semifinals and Indianapolis were judged by different chairs, and any lone caption can drift a tenth on that alone. But drift does not line up seven boxes the same way. The breadth is what reads as a genuine step in the show rather than a favorable room, and it is why the number is more likely to travel than a total propped up by one generous line.

Season high is not the same as untouchable, and the board keeps that honest: three corps sit inside 2.06 at the top, and the number below has been climbing as fast as the number on top. A 2.06 lead in late July is a cushion, not a verdict — roughly the ground a single clean run can make up. What tonight settled is narrower and real: for the first time in a week, the corps in front are back to trailing, and the leader answered a close call by moving further away instead of standing still.
