The Most Underrated Corps in DCI

This desk has written about Colts twice, Vanguard twice, Crown twice, and the finals bubble until the bubble filed a restraining order. Blue Stars — fourth at NightBEAT, a season-high 89.9, sixth in the country — have not had a headline all summer. That ends here, because the numbers underneath the quiet are strange and good: the third-best color guard in DCI riding in the same show as a tenth-ranked battery, a season-table lead over Phantom Regiment built entirely on a tiebreaker, and a projection model that has doubled their odds of a Saturday-night trophy in eight days.

Attention in this sport follows drama, and Blue Stars have committed the unforgivable sin of not producing any. No single-night surge, no shocking dip, no streak snapped on a strange panel. Just 13 shows in three weeks, 77.4 in La Crosse to 90.1 at NightBEAT, with exactly one negative number in the ledger — a 0.075 shrug in Atlanta that they answered the next night with a season high. Fourth place at NightBEAT put them on a sheet with the entire championship conversation, and the only corps that beat them were the three the sport already agrees are medaling.

Underrated is a claim, so here is the test this piece applies: where the sheets, the ledgers, and the model each say Blue Stars belong — and where the eleven-corps consensus of casual attention has actually filed them. The gap between those two answers is the story.

The steadiness is the point. Corps that gain in bursts are corps whose design arrived late; corps that gain 1.1 a show, every show, are corps executing a plan that was finished in June. The one dip on the card — Atlanta, five-thousandths of a point per judge — came at the Southeastern Championship against the deepest field they’d seen, and the recovery took exactly one night. This is what a program with no soft spots in its calendar looks like, and it is precisely the shape of season that never trends anywhere.

No other top-eight corps carries a spread like this. The guard’s 17.9 at NightBEAT trails only the two corps fighting for the championship — it out-scored Carolina Crown’s guard in the same building, on the same panel, on the same night. That is a medalist’s caption living in a sixth-place show. And percussion sits 9th, keeping company with the bubble. A corps with a top-three caption and a bottom-half caption is a corps whose ceiling and floor are having an argument, and late-season score growth usually goes to whoever wins it: guard writing is hard to upgrade in August, but battery cleaning is exactly what the last two weeks are for. The spread, in other words, is upside.

Ahead of Phantom on a Technicality They Earned
Five meetings, zero outright wins — and the higher season score anyway. The tiebreaker is doing the heavy lifting, so it deserves to be shown.

The McKinney night needs spelling out, because a scoreboard that reads 87.8–87.8 looks like a coin toss and wasn’t one. When totals tie, DCI breaks the tie on combined General Effect — the two captions that score the show’s design and impact rather than its execution — and there Blue Stars had it, 35.1 to 34.7. Second place to Phantom’s third, decided by four-tenths on the effect sheets. Phantom had won the four meetings before that — never by less than a point, starting at 1.8 in La Crosse — and then the margin went to zero and stayed there. Since McKinney the two have not shared a field, and the season board now reads Blue Stars sixth, Phantom seventh — a lead built on trajectory and one tiebreaker, which sounds fragile until you notice which direction every gap in that table is moving.

Testing the Ceiling
The corps above them are not standing still. The gaps are shrinking anyway.

Boston Crusaders have beaten Blue Stars all three times they’ve met — and the margin has gone from four and a half points to under three in eight days, against a Boston corps the model rates the fourth-best in the country. Vanguard, one row up the board, have faced them exactly once, 2.73 back in San Antonio ten days and four Blue Stars season-highs ago; the season-table gap today is 1.85. Below them, the story inverts: 6-and-0 against the Colts surge everyone spent the weekend writing about, including this desk. The corps directly underneath keeps not catching them, and the corps directly above keep getting closer to arm’s reach. That is what sixth-and-rising looks like on paper.

Eight days ago the Monte Carlo gave Blue Stars a 24.2% chance of standing in the trophy row Saturday night in Indianapolis. The current run says 3.9% — a coin flip, the sharpest repricing of any corps in the top eight over that span, and it now projects their Finals median at 93.83 to Phantom’s 94.31. Honesty about the ceiling: the medal probability is 0.2%, which is the model’s way of saying this is a fight for sixth, not third. Underrated does not mean secretly a medalist. It means the consensus has them fighting Colts for relevance when the data says they’re in a coin-flip fight with Phantom Regiment for a chair in the trophy row.

The guard is top-three in America. The consensus hasn’t noticed the corps attached to it.

Tonight and tomorrow hand them Carolina Crown twice — two more cross-tier reference points for that guard number. Friday’s Eastern Classic in Allentown is the real one: Bluecoats, Blue Devils, and the Colts ledger all on one panel, the deepest sheet Blue Stars will see before Indianapolis. And August 3 in Lexington finally re-runs the fixture this piece turns on — Phantom Regiment, first shared field since the McKinney tiebreak, with sixth place in the country functioning as the stakes. If Blue Stars win that one outright, no tiebreaker asterisk survives, and the word for their season stops being quiet.

Scores from DCI and CompetitionSuite recaps, exhibitions excluded. Caption ranks compare each corps’s most recent full sheet, so cross-corps caption comparisons span different panels and carry normal judge-to-judge variance; the NightBEAT guard comparison (Blue Stars vs Crown) is same-panel. Tie-breaking per DCI procedure: equal totals are ordered by combined General Effect.
