Blue Knights 86.750. Pacific Crest 86.663. Twelfth and thirteenth, separated by 0.087, which is smaller than the smallest mark any judge on that panel is allowed to write down.

Blue Knights march on Saturday. Pacific Crest go home. There is no partial credit at the cut line and there is no appeal.

Twenty four hours earlier, at Prelims, Pacific Crest sat 12th at 87.350 and Blue Knights sat 13th at 86.913. Pacific Crest were inside the cut by 0.437, which is not a comfortable lead but is a real one. The two corps traded 0.524 of ground in a single night, and the Finals berth went with it.

Pacific Crest lost 0.687 off their Prelims number, and it is not spread evenly. The largest single hit was color guard: 18.000 to 17.200, a raw drop of 0.800 worth 0.400 against the total.

Sit with the size of that for a second. The margin that ended their season was 0.087. One caption, on one night, moved 0.400, roughly 5 times the gap. At Prelims that guard scored 18.000, 9th of the 20 corps scored that night, ahead of 3 corps who finished above them overall: Colts, Spirit of Atlanta, Troopers. It was the strongest thing Pacific Crest had. On the night it mattered it was the thing that went.

Blue Knights did not exactly seize the seat, either. They went -0.163 on the same night, losing ground themselves. Nobody rose to take the last spot in the Finals field. It was simply the case that on Friday one corps fell 0.687 and the other fell 0.163, and eighty seven thousandths of a point is what was left between them.

Read the book columns before anything else. Pacific Crest won the effect book. Both General Effect captions went their way, worth +0.125 against Blue Knights. On the two sheets that ask whether the show landed, the corps that got sent home was the better one.

They lost it in the craft book, by 0.213, and they lost it in a very specific place. Not the guard, which is the caption that collapsed against their own Thursday sheet. Against Blue Knights their guard was still ahead. What beat them was the music execution: brass, 17.300 against 17.700, a raw 0.400 that is worth 0.200 against the total, and percussion, another 0.150.

Those two captions alone cost 0.350. The margin was 0.087. Everything else on the page was in Pacific Crest’s favor and it did not matter, because a hornline that is fighting itself and a battery playing over the top of it are the two things a music panel cannot un-hear.

That is worth sitting with for a different reason than the rest of this package. Everywhere else tonight, the desk is arguing that the sheet and the stadium disagreed. Here they did not. From the stands the read was messy brass and drums overpowering the ensemble. The recap says brass and percussion, in that order, by exactly enough to end the season. This is the one result on the page where the panel and the building saw the same thing.

Two nights in a row that stadium wanted Madison Scouts in the Finals field, and two nights in a row the recap said no. It is worth being exact about why, because the reason is not that they were outclassed. It is that they were out-executed, and those are different findings.

Madison Scouts won the effect book and lost the Finals field anyway. On the two captions that ask whether the show worked, they finished +0.075 ahead of the corps that took the twelfth seat. On the six that ask how cleanly it was done, they finished 0.575 behind, and the second number is bigger than the first by more than the margin.

If you have been reading this desk all week wondering whether the emotion-versus-precision thing is a real pattern or a convenient frame, this is the answer. It is real, it is measurable, and it is worth exactly half a point to Madison Scouts.

Caption by caption against Blue Knights: Madison took 3 of the eight, and the ones they took are the ones that describe a show rather than a drill chart. General Effect Music, Visual Analysis, Music Analysis. Their General Effect Music mark of 17.750 is the highest of the three corps who spent Friday night arguing over the bottom of the Finals field.

The same holds against Pacific Crest, the other corps in that argument. Madison beat them on 3 of the three music captions: general effect music by 0.200, brass by 0.300 and music analysis by 0.275. Whatever else was true on Friday, the panel did not think Madison Scouts had the weaker music. They play music, and the music captions say so.

And then the drumline. Madison’s percussion came back 16.250 against Blue Knights’ 17.300, a raw gap of 1.050 worth 0.525 against the total. Madison finished 0.500 out. One caption is worth more than the entire deficit.

So the arithmetic is not close to ambiguous. Hand Madison Scouts a merely average drumline for their tier, hold every other caption exactly where the panel put it, and their total reads 86.775, which is 0.025 clear of the last corps in the field. That is not a simulation and it is not a prediction about how Saturday would have gone. It is one line of the recap, sized against a result.

Madison Scouts did not miss Finals because their show was not good enough. By the panel’s own effect scores it was better than the show that got in. They missed it in the battery, and the sheet is built so that the battery outweighs the argument.

Both of these corps will get a number on Saturday morning that says how close it was, and neither number will help. Somebody at Pacific Crest is going to spend the winter thinking about a color guard that scored 18.000 on Thursday and 17.200 on Friday. Somebody at Madison is going to spend it in a drum room.
