Blue Stars 93.200. Phantom Regiment 93.063. The whole argument came down to 0.137, which is roughly what one judge changes their mind about between the gate and the press box.

It is the closest finish anywhere in the top eight. It is not, for the record, the closest finish on the night. That belongs to Spirit of Atlanta and Troopers down at 10 and 11, separated by 0.012, a gap about eleven times smaller than this one. Prelims was a tight night most of the way down.

That level meeting is worth a sentence of its own, because a tie is not a near miss. At DCI McKinney on Jul 20 both corps posted 87.800, the same number, and the recap placed them equal. DCI breaks a tie on combined general effect, where Blue Stars held 35.100 to Phantom’s 34.700. So the pressure had been building on that seam for weeks before it finally gave.

Blue Stars took 5 of the eight sheets and won the night on the front of the book. Both general effect captions went their way, and so did brass. That is the profile of a show built to land as a whole experience, an electronics-forward design that wants you reacting to the wash rather than auditing the interior. When it works, it works on the effect sheets first, and on Thursday it did.

Phantom won 3, and one of them was not close. Their percussion mark beat Blue Stars by 0.500, the widest single-caption gap between these two corps on the page and nearly four times the final margin. That battery ranked 5 in the top 8. Blue Stars ranked 8 of 8, last in the tier.

Which is the strange, good fact at the center of this result. Blue Stars won a head-to-head while fielding the weakest drumline in the top eight, because they beat Phantom everywhere the audience lives. And Phantom lost one while carrying a genuinely excellent one. The low brass has come a long way this season and the music captions show it, but a drumline and a hornline that good are currently paying for ground the design gives back somewhere else.

Nothing about 0.137 is stable. It is smaller than the week-to-week noise on either of these corps, small enough that Semifinals could hand it back without anything actually changing about either show. But seeding is seeding, and for one night the corps that has been chasing all summer is the one in front.
