A caption, not just a corps

Phantom Regiment finished 7th at 2026 Finals on a 92.6. Brass was the corps' weakest caption relative to that placement, 8th of 12 finalists. Regiment opened 2027 auditions this week (regiment.org, Sep 10) into a program that is already rebuilding four of eight design chairs, five of them staffers pulled directly from Santa Clara Vanguard's design team. An audition cycle this size, arriving alongside a design staff this new, is not routine off-season recruiting. It is the membership side of the same rebuild.

What the scale implies

A corps replacing this much of its creative staff at once typically also needs the performing roster to match the new staff's vision, particularly in the caption identified as weakest. Regiment's own marketing language, inviting members to discover they have "been building toward this all along," is standard audition copy, but the timing next to the design-staff overhaul is not incidental. New brass leadership arriving via Vince Oliver, whose credits run through Bluecoats and Mandarins rather than Regiment's own bench, means the audition cycle is also the first chance for that new brass chair to build a section in its own image rather than inherit one built under JD Shaw's departed program.

The hole being filled

Read against the caption sheet, the audition push is not just filling graduating spots. It is the first concrete opportunity for a rebuilt design staff, brass chair included, to put its own read on the roster into practice in the caption that the 2026 sheet said needed the most work. Whether the corps closes the Brass gap in 2027 will be the clearest single data point on whether this off-season's staff overhaul, the largest single-cycle talent migration in recent DCI memory, actually solves the problem it was built to solve.
